There are many good reasons for wanting to block out all of the sun's rays from coming into your home. You might want to protect your home's soft furnishings from fading due to exposure to ultraviolet light, for instance. Then again, you might want to block out the sun's light because it helps to keep your interior cool. However, by far the most common reason for people to fit window treatments that block out the sun entirely is that they want to be able to continue to sleep after dawn has broken in the morning. If you are looking for blinds that will provide you with a high level of sunlight blockage, then what are the best options to consider?

Roman Blinds

So long as the Roman blinds you are fitting have been lined, they will do a very good job of blocking out sunlight during the day. The trouble with many Roman blinds you will find in shops around Australia today is that they are simply not lined properly. You can have a lining material fitted afterwards, of course, but this adds to their overall cost. In addition, Roman blinds tend to block out some light when you have them in their raised position something that you do not get with a pair of curtains, for instance.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are extremely effective at providing privacy and light control. However, a set of Venetians will never block out all of the sunlight that may be falling onto your window from outside. This is because part of their design relies on small holes in their numerous slats. Through these, the manufacturer will run nylon string or ribbon to help raise and lower them. No matter how small the maker fashions these holes, a small amount of light will always break through as a consequence of them being there. This makes them undesirable in north-facing bedrooms where you will want to sleep after dawn.

Roller Blinds

One of the best options for a total blackout of your window is a roller blind. Unlike the Roman variety, they completely roll up out of the way when you want them to allow light in during the daytime. However, they can also block out the entire window when wanted. It is important to make sure that your roller blind is made to the exact dimensions of your window, including its frame. Otherwise, it will not be able to prevent light from seeping in around the sides. Furthermore, the material that the window treatment is made from will be crucial. Remember that many fabrics will not block out all of the sun's rays, and you may have to purchase a particular man-made material in order to achieve a total blackout.
